It's a Family Affair: Lose with Loved Ones

You're all in this together - so why not make healthy living a family affair? According to the CDC, an estimated 68 percent of Americans are either obese or overweight. Even more frightening is the fact that 17 percent of children ages 2 through 19 are obese and 32 percent are overweight. It's not hard to figure out that heavy children grow up to be heavy adults. As the head of household, there are plenty of ways to combat the fat by making healthy and exercise a priority for your family. We're talking about activities that won't cost you a thing but may save a life. Set aside some time every evening to get physical. Those dishes aren't going anywhere. After dinner, go outside and get moving. Take your kids or spouse on a walk after dinner. Round up the neighborhood kids for a spontaneous game of kickball.

There are plenty of things to do as a family that don't center around the television or the computer. Walking or horseplay with the kids for 20 minutes can burn 78 calories. On the weekends, skip the movies and hit a nearby park for a game of football or soccer. Even if you opt for zoos or museums, you can get your exercise in by spending the day walking. If your child is involved in a team sport, take time to practice with him or her. Not only are you helping improve his or her game, you're also getting in on the act. Getting physical is a great way to bond. You're spending quality time together while also burning calories. Remember, you set the example for your children. Lead by example and help your family members become physically fit.
