All right, all right, all right! If that's what you like to hear come out of your mate's mouth, you're not alone. Y'all seem to love a Southern accent best of all, according to a survey done by online dating site Cupid.com. Those who hail from Southern states took 36.5 percent of the vote in a poll of more than 2,000 Cupid.com participants. And more men liked their women with a drawl β 45 percent, as opposed to 28 percent of women. Second place went to New York, where 16.5 percent of those polled said they preferred a fast talker. Western, New England, New Jersey, Canadian, Midwestern and Midatlantic, respectively, rounded out the list of North American dialects. Why do we prefer these ways of talking? Cupid.com theorizes, "It seems that when it comes to love, daters are looking for partners who conform to the gender stereotypes of softly-spoken women and tough-talking men."
And if you prefer men from across the globe, an unofficial poll on Facebook found that Brits win when it comes to Americans' global accent preferences. And Irish eyes will be smiling when they find out the Irish accent came in second in the YourTango.com poll. Por favor, pass the paella, because Spanish accents came in third. Aussies take the fourth spot, and Southern Americans β the same ones who took the top spot in Cupid.com's poll βthe fifth spot."Your date's accent may not seem like a vital detail - especially when meeting someone online - but your subconscious reaction when they speak could make or break a relationship," Cupid.com says.
