Chocolate... Pizza... Soda... For years, these popular foods have been the scapegoat as leading causes of acne. But how much of a contribution does diet really play in causing zits? While some experts maintain there is no correlation between the two, there's a mounting body of evidence that proves otherwise. Even the FDA maintains that there is no scientific connection. However, dermatologists like Dr. Nicholas Perricone maintain that diet is the root of all acne evils. For starters, he says that inflammation is the underlying cause of skin issues, and this inflammation is linked directly to the foods you eat. According to Dr. Perricone, people who feast on a pro-inflammatory diet are at risk for diseases including acne. These foods cause a spike in blood sugar, which, in turn, prompts an insulin response, and that causes an inflammatory response. Because of this, there is inflammation on a cellular level. The key is to keep blood sugar levels consistent.
