Church Chat: When Partners Have Different Beliefs

Many people have been raised within certain religions or with specific values and morals before they enter the world of dating, love, sex and marriage. Compatibility is a major component in getting involved in a serious relationship, and these views play a big part in taking a relationship to the next level, whether it's moving in together, deciding to have a child or getting married. So what are two lovers supposed to do when they don't have the same religious beliefs? Above all, it's important to remember that you love each other and consistently should show each other that love and respect for one another. Examine how you each feel about your own personal religion - how strongly do you hold your beliefs? What are the dealbreakers that potentially could end your relationship? Important questions to ask your partner about his or her beliefs include his or her belief in God and how big of a role God/spirituality plays in his or her daily life.

From there, examine how his or her family feels about welcoming someone of a different faith into their family - and if you plan on having children, then it's important to come to an agreement not only with your partner, but also with the in-laws, about how the child will be raised. Celebrating holidays can be a sticking point with families as well. Work out the details of how you will observe religious holidays before taking the plunge. Unfortunately, knowing when it won't work is as important as actually making it work. Experts say couples handle differences better when neither is too invested in his or her faith and values. However, it's best to know before making any important decisions about your future.
