Once you decide that your child should have a phone, it's time to lay down ground rules about usage, minutes and when it's inappropriate to use the phone. It may help to make a list of approved contacts, or preprogram the child's cell after you purchase it. Educate the child about school rules and proper cell phone etiquette in other situations. Help him learn how to adjust the phone's volume and how to turn it on vibrate for public places like movie theaters. Advise him that it's not OK to take embarrassing pictures on the phone - if it has that functionality. If you think your child is up for the responsibility of owning a cell phone, then give it a try. Just choose the right phone for your needs.
